In 2004, no less an authority than Hall of Fame track coach Roger Haynes has called Steve Hartman “our best distance runner ever.” Haynes’ claim is not entirely based on Hartman’s considerable accomplishments but also factors in how far he progressed in his college career and the wide variety of distances at which he excelled. At the time of his induction, Hartman was on Fighting Scots’ honor rolls at every distance from 800 to 10,000 meters and held the Midwest Conference indoor record in the 1500-meter run (3:56.73). Although those items are subject to change, something that can’t be taken away is Hartman’s All-American fourth-place finish in the steeplechase in 1992. He won a total of three MWC track titles and added three All-MWC finishes in cross country, including a sixth-place finish in 1989.
