For a few years in the 1980s, the third-best all-time hitter in Division III baseball was Rich Well, a Lewistown High School product who made a name for himself in two sports at Monmouth College.

Baseball was Well’s strong suit, and the catcher concluded his career with three All-Midwest Conference selections and an incredible .441 average. In 1985, Well hit .506, earning All-District and honorable mention All-America honors. His 17 career homers set a school record.

Well was also a solid contributor in basketball and he scored a career-high 11 points as the Fighting Scots won the 1985 MWC title game. He was named the Outstanding Male Athlete of his class his sophomore, junior and senior years.

Well went on to play professionally in the Montreal Expos farm system and has served as a scout for the Kansas City Royals.
