There were great MC running backs before Dennis Plummer began his Fighting Scot career, and there have been great ones since, including his Hall of Fame teammate, Ron Baker. Plummer, however, was voted by his teammates as MVP of what is arguably the greatest squad the Scots have ever put on the gridiron, the 9-0 Midwest Conference champions of 1972.

Plummer was at his best in the penultimate game of his senior year, rushing for 107 yards and adding kickoff returns of 54 and 95 yards to set a single-game record. The 95-yarder was one of his three touchdowns in the 40-30 victory. The year before, he had a school-record 97-yard run from scrimmage. Plummer finished with 1,742 career rushing yards and an MC-record 6.4 yards per carry. He was a honorable mention Little All-American in 1972 and was named to the All-State team twice.
