Judson “Jud” Jones starred at the center position on the excellent Monmouth football teams of the mid-1920s. Playing both ways, he was selected to several all-state football squads. He served as captain of the 1926 team and was noted for his playing ability and his aggressive, fighting spirit.

Jones joined such Monmouth gridiron greats as Warren Taylor, Keith Molesworth and Forest “Fat” Lewis on a 1925 squad that posted a record of 7-0-2, including a 12-0 victory over Knox. The team finished first in the Little 19 Conference and tied for first in the Midwest Conference. That year, the Scots also defeated Lake Forest 16-0, holding their star running back Folgate – “the Red Grange of Lake Forest” – to 13 yards on 14 carries. Monmouth finished 7-1 in Jones’ senior season.

He was also a member of the varsity basketball team during his years at Monmouth, and then went on to a long sportswriting career with the Monmouth daily newspaper.
