With Ross Richardson playing a key role in the offensive line, the Fighting Scots football team went 26-3 during his three years as a starter. The 6-foot-1, 250-pound guard was an honorable mention All-Midwest Conference selection in 1987. In 1988, he made the Associated Press Little All-America and first-team All-MWC squads in addition to earning two team honors – the prestigious McClintock Award and Most Valuable Offensive Lineman.

Richardson then turned his attention to his senior year of track, and he was outstanding there as well. Already a two-time All-American and an MWC champ in the shot put, Richardson had a near-perfect season in that event, winning the indoor and outdoor conference titles and earning All-American honors outdoors. His indoor shot put title throw of 51'6-1/4 was an MWC record.

Richardson also experienced success as a collegiate track coach.
