Mary Ann Day was the workhorse of the Fighting Scots’ softball pitching staff for four seasons. She started 47 games and finished 45 of them, including a 13-inning marathon against Coe. In the process, she established a number of school records, including lowest career ERA (1.61), single-season ERA (1.00 in 1983) and most career shutouts (11). Additionally, her 192 strikeouts, 45 complete games and 326 innings ranked high on the Scots’ all-time list. Day’s career record was 28-20, and she led the Scots to four straight Midwest Conference tournament appearances, including the South Division championship in 1985.

Day continued her athletic involvement as a softball and volleyball coach at Illinois senior and junior high schools in Stanford, Delavan, Morton, Germantown Hills and East Peoria.
