Recruited out of Rockland Community College to play basketball, Jeff Steinberger “got the fever to play football again” and worked his way into starting positions at offensive and defensive end. By his senior year, he was selected to the all-conference team as defensive end and was named MVP of the Homecoming game. While at Monmouth, he also competed in basketball and track.

The professional ranks took notice, and Steinberger played two years in Minnesota Vikings’ organization. He signed a contract with the Cleveland Browns in 1970 and, after playing for various semi-pro teams in Connecticut, he joined the Philadelphia Bell of the World Football League, where he was a starting defensive end for one season. His most memorable experience was playing against the Chicago Fire at Soldier Field with former Monmouth classmates in attendance. During the game, he had a quarterback sack and an interception.
