Jim Thornton was such a prolific scorer for the Fighting Scots that it only seemed like he started each game with a couple baskets already to his credit. Unmistakable, though, was that by the end of the game, he had produced another double-digit scoring performance.

In his three-year Monmouth career, the sharpshooter from Chillicothe rang up 10 points or more in his final 31 games, setting a school record. It still stood at the time of his induction, and his career scoring average of 18.0 points was only topped by four other Scots. He finished with 1,151 points.

Thornton earned All-Midwest Conference honors three times, including his senior year, when he was 11th in the nation in scoring.

His time at Monmouth prepared him for a successful coaching career. Through 2010, Thornton had more than 300 victories, including a runner-up finish with his high school alma mater in the 2006 state tournament.
