John “Web” Weatherly’s impressive track and field accomplishments earn him a place among the best athletes who have worn the Crimson and White. Weatherly, a former Illinois high school champion in the 100-yard dash, won four individual Midwest Conference championships in track and was a member of the conference championship mile-relay team in 1932. His individual championships came in 1931, when he won the 100- and 200-yard dashes, and again in 1932, when he won the same two events. Named an All-American in the triple jump, Weatherly won the triple jump at the 1931 Drake Relays. His mark of 47’7 is the longest-standing record in MC track history, lasting into the 21st century. During 1931, Weatherly was also an AAU national medallist and was named an alternate member of the 1932 U.S. Olympic team.
