All-around athlete Barry Frakes won 11 varsity letters in football, basketball and track at Monmouth College.

He was an All-Midwest Conference running back during his junior year in 1953, and the following season he repeated his all-conference status while adding All-American laurels. Frakes, who hailed from Viola, Ill., scored 14 touchdowns and 11 extra points in the Scots’ first seven games in 1953 to lead the nation with 95 points before suffering a separated shoulder. His top performance came against Ripon when he scored a school-record 28 points on four touchdowns and four extra points.

Frakes played forward in basketball and competed in the long jump, pole vault, javelin and discus in track.

He went on to a distinguished career as principal of Rockridge Junior High School, form 1961 until his untimely death in 1985. A plaque in Frakes’ honor was placed in the school.
