In the 130-year history of intercollegiate tennis at Monmouth College, no one has surpassed the accomplishments of David Johnson. Johnson's name can be found all over the record book, starting with his 73 singles victories, 82 doubles wins and 155 combined victories, all school records. Along the way, he won plenty of big matches, three times claiming the Midwest Conference's No. 2 singles title and adding a pair of No. 1 doubles crowns with David Stewart. That 1-2 punch helped the Scots place second in the conference in three of Johnson's four years, a finish topped only by Monmouth's 1938 champions. As a senior, Johnson was an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete and was ranked fifth regionally, one spot out of the NCAA tournament. He was a threetime qualifier for MWC All-Academic honors. The ultimate competitor, Johnson had a knack for fighting back in matches, including victories from a set down in the conference tourney his
sophomore and junior seasons.
