A native of nearby Media, Joe Campbell first came to Monmouth College in the fall of 1942, but the escalating war caused him to enter the Navy V-12 program at the University of Wisconsin the following year. He was a starting halfback for the Badgers, playing alongside All-American and future pro Earl Girard. In a 1944 contest against Michigan, Campbell returned a kickoff 88 yards – at that time a school record.

Following a year of military duty in China, Campbell returned to Monmouth in 1946 and participated in football and track. As co-captain in 1947, Campbell helped lead his team to a third-place 5-2-1 season, including a 22-0 win over Knox.

After graduating magna cum laude, Campbell pursued a career as a sales manager for Bethlehem Steel Corporation. He served his alma mater as a member of the College Senate and as president of the Alumni Association.
