A highly-recruited 6-foot-7 giant from Colorado, circumstances limited King to just two games in his first two seasons. He bounced back from those disappointments, though, to finish with two full campaigns at Monmouth. He used his final year of eligibility to play basketball while attending graduate school at Northwestern University. He led the Wildcats in scoring in the 1945-46 season and was fourth in the Big Ten in scoring, earning honorable mention All-Big Ten honors.

In 1947, King became a charter member of the National Basketball Association with the Rochester Royals, helping to inaugurate a league that would go on to become one of the most popular professional sports leagues in the world.

Following his two-season professional career with AAU and NBA teams, King turned his attention to education and went on to become a noted specialist in the field.
