Alex Thom earned 11 varsity letters at MC – three each in football, track and wrestling and two in swimming. He was a member of the 1925 “Trick-a-Minute Machine” football team and it was said of him in the Ravelings that he was one of the scrappiest little ends ever seen in the state. A skilled blocker and tackler, he was especially strong on defense. Wrestling in the 145-pound class, he was a member of MC’s first intercollegiate team.

He later had an outstanding career coaching football, track and basketball at New Albany (Ind.) High School, where he also served as athletic director for 19 years. His football teams won 107 games over a 22-year period and his track teams won 26 of a possible 28 sectional titles. He was elected to Indiana’s Football Hall of Fame in 1974.
