One of the most prolific scorers in the history of MC basketball, Jerry Mell set records for most points in a game (44) and highest points per game average in a season (26.5), both in 1961-62, when the Scots finished with a record of 17-5. He scored 1,066 points during his three-year varsity career.

Mell was an all-conference selection in basketball his junior year, and was chosen all-conference and All-American as a senior. In addition to three varsity letters in basketball, Mell earned two letters as a first baseman in baseball.

During his career, Mell was the second-ranked basketball scorer in the history of the Midwest Conference. He made 78.5 percent of his career free throw attempts and joined Hall of Famers Donny Armstrong, Pete Kovacs and Bud McRoberts in MC's 1,000-Point Club.
