Monmouth College Athletics

Dick Sloan is an individual whose star rose steadily in athletics following his graduation from Monmouth. As a Fighting Scot, he lettered twice in football as a defensive back and punter, but his real interest was in swimming and tennis, and he was a three-time letterwinner in both sports.

Pursuing his master’s degree at the University of Illinois, Sloan became the U of I assistant swimming coach and produced five All-American selections from 1962-66. He made a big splash at Kenyon College, producing seven conference champion swim teams and the national runner-up team at the 1969 NCAA meet. He also had eight national individual champions.

In 1973, Dick began a 14-year tenure as swim coach at Ohio State University. His Buckeyes produced four All-Americans, eight conference champions and two U.S. Swimming national titlists. In 1984, he coached on the U.S. Swimming International Team.
