In the world of football, “special teams” can mean two things, and both definitions fit Chuck Goehl. He was a member of one of the most special teams in MC gridiron history, the unbeaten squad of 1972, earning second team All-Midwest Conference honors as a safety. It was on special teams, though, where Goehl really excelled. Playing before the advent of Division III football, Goehl averaged 19.0 yards per punt return in his career, including a mind-boggling 24.5 yards in 1972. For many years, the only Division II player ahead of him in both categories was former NFL star Billy “White Shoes” Johnson.

Following graduation, he was invited to the Minnesota Vikings’ camp and he later played for the Chicago Fire of the World Football League. Beginning in 1979, he began a coaching and teaching career at Elmhurst College.
