McNaughton was born in Jamaica and came to Monmouth by way of Illinois state track power Evanston High School, where he trained under Olympian Willie May. He attended Monmouth in 1981-82, then returned in 1984 for his final three years. Although he was an All-Midwest Conference soccer player, his top sport was track and field, and he attained All-American status in 1987 with a fourth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, his signature event. He won a total of nine MWC championships in three events, including six indoor titles.

A quiet, forthright young man, McNaughton did whatever was necessary to help the track team, running in relays and races that weren’t his specialty. He routinely practiced for an hour before his teammates arrived for the regular practice. Coach Roger Haynes called him the “most valuable track and field athlete in the Midwest Conference.”
