During his college career, James Vipond excelled as a “running guard” in football, and he was capable of playing both offense and defense. He earned three varsity football letters, was named to the All-MWC team in both his junior and senior years and was a two-time Little All-American. Like many other Monmouth College athletes, Vipond participated in more than one sport, earning three varsity letters in track and winning Midwest Conference championships in the pole vault in 1938 and 1939.

After graduation, Vipond spent 35 years in the field of education before retiring as principal of Lexington (Ill.) High School. He coached football, basketball and track while serving such Illinois school districts as Byron, Wyanet, Rock Falls and Lexington.
