When Paul McIlvain came to Monmouth College in January 1946, the athletic program was struggling to get back on its feet following World War II. As freshmen, McIlvain and his fellow Geneseo buddy, Don Armstrong, became an integral part of a basketball team which surged to conference championship contention in the early post-war days.

“Mac” lettered in four sports, distinguishing himself in basketball, baseball and track and earning conference honors in baseball and basketball.

After college, he continued his interest in sports as a way of life, contending that the discipline fostered success in any endeavor. He helped organize programs for young people as well as his peers in Evanston and Rock Island, and he continued to participate himself.
