The son and grandson of two former Monmouth College presidents – T. H. McMichael and Jackson Burgess McMichael – David McMichael was himself a leader at the college. He served as vice president and business manager from 1929-53 and was instrumental in creating the Student Union in the basement of McMichael Hall.

After graduating from Monmouth College in 1916, McMichael volunteered in the French Ambulance Corps during World War I. He returned to his alma mater in 1924 as a coach. He worked under the administration of athletic director Herb Hart until 1938. The athletic program at the college became more diversified during that period and witnessed the re-emphasis on women’s sports at Monmouth. McMichael, who captained the basketball team for two years at Monmouth, later coached Doris Holt to a state singles title.
