Bill Axline, Sr. was a natural leader who dedicated himself to the service of his fellows and his college. Captain of the football and basketball teams during his playing years at Monmouth, Axline won three letters each in track and basketball and one in football. He was also elected student body president his senior year.

His traits of leadership and service continued beyond his graduation and throughout his 88 years until his death in 1986. An avid outdoorsman, he founded the Warren County Conservation Club. Through the years he sponsored and guided many area students who attended Monmouth College, and he was a member of the Monmouth College Senate during the 1950s.

After coaching at Princeville (Ill.) High School from 1921-24, Axline began his pharmacy business in nearby Roseville in 1927, and remained there until he opened a similar business in Monmouth in 1969.
