Hazel Hatch scored a near-perfect 499 x 500 and won first place at the National Rifle Association’s National Individual Women’s Championship in 1948. She is believed to have been the first woman from Monmouth College to win a championship in national competition. During her senior year, Hatch placed second at the NRA’s National Individual Women’s Championship.

Competition in rifle was not recognized by the college as an intercollegiate sport at the time of her accomplishments. For that reason, she did not receive a varsity M for her participation in rifle and her outstanding national accomplishments. The M Club gave her “long overdue” recognition for her achievement with a varsity letter at the time of her Hall of Fame induction.
