Although the years 1955-57 were lean ones for Monmouth football, the Fighting Scots could match halfback Dean Fischer against any back in the league.

Fischer was twice named all-conference and also received Little All-American recognition in football. Additionally, he was the conference long jump champion during his two-year varsity track career.

Fischer, a 6-1, 185-pound back, highlighted his senior year with an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Carleton and a 95-yard punt return for a score vs. Knox.

After graduation, Fischer pursued a career in journalism. Beginning in 1964 he worked for 17 years as a correspondent for Time magazine in Washington, D.C., and abroad before being appointed Washington news editor. He then became assistant secretary of state for public affairs and a spokesman for the U.S. Department of State. Fischer later returned to work for Time.
