The first Fighting Scot woman to win an individual Midwest Conference cross country championship was Angie Hickerson, who accomplished the feat in 1986. Two weeks later, she ran the fastest 5K time in school history (18:41), good for 15th place at the NCAA regional meet. She placed fifth at the MWC meet as a junior, her first cross country season after two years of varsity volleyball, and took 34th at the NCAA regional. She was team MVP in both cross country seasons and was also a two-time team MVP in track and field, establishing the indoor school record in the 1500 (4:58.5).

In all, Hickerson earned eight varsity letters and was named the outstanding female athlete of her class as a junior and senior. After graduation, Hickerson served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of captain and earning a Bronze Star.
