After running the option for coach Kelly Kane at Galesburg High School, Reed followed Kane to Monmouth College and left the Fighting Scots as the career leader in total yards for a quarterback (5,889).

Reed will be remembered as one of the keys to a football transformation at Monmouth. The Scots had won just eight games in the four seasons before he arrived. In Reed’s final two years, they went 17-2, reaching the MWC title game and earning a Top 20 ranking in 1987.

The four-year starter earned two first team All-MWC quarterback honors and was an honorable mention All-American. In 1987, he set a national record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (17), and he ranked 10th in the nation in scoring.

Reed went on to serve as a Fighting Scots assistant coach under Kane for eight years.
