Pete Kovacs rewrote the basketball record book on scoring at Monmouth College, and his name topped the scoring list for 40 years. Kovacs scored the most career points (1,502) at Monmouth, averaging 20.5 points. He also made the most free throws (175) in a season and career. Best known for his accuracy from the foul line, his free-throw percentage was the second highest in the nation in 1953-54. As a senior, he was the national free-throw leader, making 175-of-199 (87.9 percent), including a Monmouth record 55 straight.

Kovacs was named first team All-Midwest Conference as a freshman, junior and senior and second team All-MWC as a sophomore. He also received honorable mention as a Little All-American during his senior year.

Continuing his interest in athletics, Kovacs served as a football and basketball official while teaching physical education in Elgin, Ill.
