Despite his unorthodox shot, there have been few Fighting Scot shooters more accurate or prolific than Don Tanney. As a senior, Tanney posted arguably the finest individual basketball season ever for a student-athlete. While holding down a perfect 4.0 GPA, he earned team MVP and All-Midwest Conference honors by averaging 25.5 points per game on 58.0 percent shooting. Included in his stellar campaign, which saw him finish eighth in the nation in scoring, was a 23-of-26 performance at the foul line in one of the greatest Monmouth-Knox battles ever staged. Tanney scored 127 points for the junior varsity his freshman year, then added 946 varsity points.

Unaccustomed to losing at MC, Tanney carried that disdain for the loss column into his football coaching career. He was 91-29 record at Dunlap (Ill.) High School, and he guided Lexington (Ill.) High School to the 2001 state championship game.
