Bill Reed led a life dedicated to his country and its educational system. His service to the armed forces lasted 45 years, and spanned World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He attained the rank of brigadier general and served as director of the selective service system for the state of Colorado.

At Monmouth College, Reed lettered in each of four years in football, basketball and baseball. He went on to coach football, basketball and track for 21 years at Loveland High School in Colorado. His football teams won six conference titles and the 1939 Colorado state football championship. His track teams won two state championships and consistently placed high at the annual Colorado relays.

Loveland has remembered Reed by naming a school and an athletic field in his honor.
