“I may be small, but I know my stuff.”
So wrote Keith Molesworth, a 98-pound halfback, in his high school yearbook in 1923. At Monmouth College, where he won three letters each in football, basketball, track and baseball, “Molie” grew to 5-foot-9 and 150 pounds. The three-time all-conference halfback formed a legendary passing duo with MC teammate Warren Taylor.
In 1931, the Chicago Bears signed Molesworth and he quarterbacked them until 1937, when he accepted a job at the U.S. Naval Academy as a backfield coach. Bears owner Gearge Halas called Molesworth one of the smartest quarterbacks he had ever seen.
Molesworth also played professional baseball, rising to the AAA level as a shortstop. He earned success as a baseball and football coach, as well, including a one-year stint as head coach of the Baltimore Colts. He served as director of personnel for the Colts from 1954-66.
