In 1953, Joan Phifer finished in seventh place at the National Rifle Association’s Intercollegiate Individual Women’s Championship. That same year she won the High Lady individual award in the NRA’s Intercollegiate Outdoor Championship and was a member of the MC team that placed second at the NRA’s intercollegiate match.

That set the stage for her junior season, when she captured first place in the individual match at the NRA’s Intercollegiate Women’s Championship and led Monmouth to a first-place team finish. She also finished second in the NRA’s Intercollegiate Women’s Prone Match.

When Phifer competed, rifle was not recognized by the college as an intercollegiate sport. At the time of her 1984 Hall of Fame induction, the M Club was proud to award her a varsity M.
