Box Score The wait was worth it for the Monmouth College tennis team which defeated Illinois College 5-4 Tuesday night, a week later than originally scheduled, to pull back to an even 3-3 in the Midwest Conference.
Academic requirements forced the Lady Blues to delay their trip to Monmouth from last week until Tuesday afternoon and the Scots were ready, taking a 2-1 lead in doubles.
Rachel Leifheit and
Natalie Curtis at No. 2 rolled through IC 8-1 to pick up the second doubles points after
Haley Johnston and
Lexi Tibbs earned the win by default at No. 3.
Curtis and Tibbs picked up default singles wins at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively to give Monmouth a 4-1 lead, needing just one more singles win to take the match. Leifheit obliged, winning handily 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4.
Emma Johanns and
McKenzie DeVilder nearly made it two more singles wins, but were edged in tight matches. No. 1 Johanns was clipped 6-3, 7-5 while DeVilder dropped a three-setter 6-1, 3-6, 10-5.
The Scots host rival Knox next Tuesday at 4:30.
