Box Score 2 The Monmouth College baseball team was swept by Grinnell College in a Saturday double header and swept in the three-game Midwest Conference series. Monmouth fell 20-9 and 9-3 on Saturday after losing 22-11 on Friday.
The Scots scored first on Saturday when
Justin Bost (Reynolds, Illinois) singled home
Logan Komater (Ottawa, Illinois) in the first.
Jack Kuethe (Pekin, Illinois) doubled home Bost and Tanner Houck (Park Ridge, Illinois) to give the Scots a 3-0 lead.
Leading 3-1 after one, the Scots added on in the second. Houck singled home
Anthony Ruggles (Aledo, Illinois) for a 4-1 lead, But the Pioneers scored seven times in the second inning off A.J> Hatlestad (New Windsor, Illinois) to push the lead to 8-4.
Raul Guillermo (Miami, Florida) homered in the third, a solo shot to cut the Grinnell lead to 8-5. The Pioneers scored four in the fifth to lead 12-5 before the Scots rallied back. Ruggles homered in the sixth, a solo shot and Monmouth loaded the bases. Guillermo doubled, scoring
Nate Melvin (Ottawa, Illinois) and Houck but Bost was thrown out at the plate on the play with the Scots down 12-8.
Grinnell scored eight runs in the sixth to go on top 20-8. Monmouth got one back in the seventh on a single by Komater but were run-rules in the opener, 20-9.
Monmouth took the lead in game two as well when Houck hit a solo home run in the third inning. In the fourth, the Scots added on when Ruggles singled with the bases loaded and
Jackson Van Iwaarden (Ballwin, Missouri) scored for a 2-0 lead.
Grinnell took the lead in the fifth against
Jeff Garrett (Aledo, Illinois) as they scored six runs. The Pioneers tied the game on a double, took the lead on a sac fly and added on with a single and 2-run home run. They scored two more in the sixth to push the lead to 8-2 and the Scots got a run back on a Guillermo groundout in the seventh. The Pioneers scored the final run of the game in the seventh for a 9-3 win and a series sweep.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Houck led the Scots with six hits in the series while Melvin had five...Komater and Ruggles both had four hits in the series...Houck scored five runs in the three games with Melvin scoring four times...Guillermo drove in six runs while Kuethe drove in four...Houck and Guillermo are tied with Kuethe for the team lead with two home runs...The Scots will host Knox at 1 p.m. on Monday and Cornell at 1 p.m. Tuesday...Both days feature double headers.
