Scots Baseball Sweeps Marywood Monday

Guillermo, Houck Go Deep

The Monmouth College baseball team earned a sweep of Marywood on Monday with 5-3 and 5-4 wins. The Scots (4-2) hit their first two home runs of the season and have now won three games in a row on their Florida trip.

Marywood got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning against Scots starter Tim McNally (Paw Paw, Illinois). They added another run in the second and a solo home run in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

Monmouth got on the board in the fourth inning when Raul Guillermo III (Miami, Florida) hit his first home run in a Scots uniform and the first Monmouth homer of 2022. In the sixth, Guillermo walked and was lifted for pinch runner Kaden Holesinger (East Moline, Illinois). With two outs, Christian Centeno (Miami, Florida) singled and Jack Kuethe (Pekin, Illinois) cut the Marywood lead to 3-2 with a single.

Owen Wolfe (Galesburg, Illinois) kept the Pacers off the board to give the Scots offense a chance. Tyler Houck (Park Ridge, Illinois) started the seventh with a single and gave way to pinch runner Todd Fowler (Chatham, Illinois). Logan Komater (Ottawa, Illinois) walked and Nate Melvin (Ottawa, Illinois) singled on a bunt. Marywood changed pitchers and Justin Bost (Reynolds, Illinois) gave the Scots a 4-3 lead with a bases-loaded single. Melvin came around to score on a groundout and Monmouth led 5-3.

Daniel Lummus (New Port Richey, Florida) took over for the Scots on the mound in the bottom of the seventh. He retired Marywood in order with a line out, ground out and fly out for his first collegiate save. Wolfe (1-0) picked up the win in his college debut.

In game two, the Scots got the offense going in the bottom of the first. Komater led off with a single and Melvin reached second on a throwing error. With one out, Bost gave Monmouth a 1-0 lead with a single to center.

Marywood tied the game in the second against Monmouth starter Cade Sharp (Aledo, Illinois). Houck singled to start the third for the Scots and with one out, Melvin singled to put runners on the corners. Bost doubled to left, scoring both runners for a 3-1 Scots lead.

Marywood tied the game in the fourth and it was still 3-3 heading to the bottom of the fifth. Houck led off with a home run, his first in a Monmouth uniform, for a 4-3 lead. A walk, error and wild pitch added to the Scots lead in the sixth.

Marywood cut the lead to 5-4 and put runners on the corner with nobody out in the seventh. Nicholas Corman (Monmouth, Illinois) came out of the bullpen and got a lineout, strikeout and ground out to secure the win. Eli Herrera (Romeoville, Illinois) earned the win and Corman picked up his first save.

Also, on Monday pitcher A.J. Hatlestad (New Windsor, Illinois) was named Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week. Hatlestad threw a complete-game shutout with five strikeouts in Monmouth's win on Sunday.

The Scost have Tuesday off before resuming action with a double header on Wednesday against Kenyon College. Game one starts at 10:30 a.m. Central time.
