After a day off on Tuesday, the Monmouth College baseball team was back in action on Wednesday with a double header against Kenyon College. The Scots (4-4) dropped the opener 10-3 and lost the nightcap 2-1, allowing two runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Monmouth scored in the top of the first.
Logan Komater (Ottawa, Illinois) was hit by a pitch end he moved to second on an errant pickoff throw. With runners on the corners,
Justin Bost (Reynolds, Illinois) singled for a 1-0 Scots lead.Â
Kenyon scored seven times in the second and three more in the third to take a 10-1 lead. Monmouth scored the final two runs of the game in the seventh inning.
Jackson Van Iwaarden (Ballwin, Missouri) led off with a walk and
Jack Kuethe (Pekin, Illinois) launched a 2-run homer to left center to cut the Kenyon lead to 10-3.Â
Riley Jennings (Knoxville, Illinois) threw three shutout innings in relief in his college debut. Jacob Brokaw (Andalusia, Illinois) took the loss for the Scots. Â
Monmouth scored in the first inning of game two as well. Komater led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Melvin singled to center and Komater scored for a 1-0 Scots lead.Â
Nick Corman (Monmouth, Illinois) started game two on the mound and allowed one hit over the first four innings while striking out three. Monmouth had runners on base in the second, third and fourth innings but were unable to add on.Â
Kenyon put two runners on base with one out in the fifth. Corman recorded a strikeout before the Lords got a single.left fielder
Daniel Lummus (New Port Richey, Florida) threw home in time to get the Kenyon runner and keep the Scots up 1-0.Â
Kenyon started the seventh with a single and a walk. Corman got two straight outs with the runners moving to second and third on a groundout. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Kenyon took a 2-1 lead with a single.Â
Monmouth put the tying run on base in the seventh.
Tyler Houck (Park Ridge, Illinois) singled with one out and made it all the way to third but was left 90 feet away as the game ended. Corman finished with a complete game and six strikeouts, but took the loss.
The Scots play one game on Thursday with a 1:00 p.m. Central Time first pitch against Messiah University. They finish the spring break trip with a double header Friday against Geneva College, starting at 9:00 a.m. CT.
