The Monmouth College men's tennis team nearly snagged their first win of the season on Sunday in a 5-4 loss to Dubuque. The match was played indoors at the Lakeside Recreation Center in Galesburg due to the cold temperatures.
The Scots went 1-2 in the doubles matches with
Andrew Shie (Davenport, Iowa) and
Brendan Guenther (Pekin, Illinois) winning at No. 1 doubles. They took the match 8-7, winning a tiebreaker at 7-5 to clinch the point.
Sawyer Day (Cuertino, California) and
Andre Myklebust (Cambridge, Wisconsin) kept the match close at No. 2 doubles but lost 8-5.
Shie dominated his No. 1 singles match, winning 6-4, 6-1. Guenther dropped the opening set at No. 2 singles but rallied to win the match 1-6, 6-2, 10-4. Day won at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-2 as the Scots won the top three singles matches. Myklebust dropped the No. 4 singles match 6-3, 7-6, losing the second set in a 7-5 tiebreak.
The Spartans took the last two singles matches 6-2, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-0 while also winning at No. 3 doubles 8-2.
Monmouth starts Midwest Conference play next Saturday at home. The Scots will host Ripon College at 9 a.m. and play Lawrence University at 3 p.m.
