Scots Drop Two Tennis Matches Saturday

Shie Goes 4-0 on the day

The Monmouth College men's tennis team opened Midwest Conference play with two home matches on Saturday. Weather forced both matches to be played indoors in Galesburg and the Scots lost 6-3 to Ripon and 7-2 to Lawrence.

In the morning match against Ripon, the Scots won the first three singles matches. Andrew Shie (Davenport, Iowa) took the No. 1 match 7-6 (5), 6-4. Brendan Guenther (Pekin, Illinois) won at No. 2 7-5, 6-4 and Sawyer Day (Cupertino, California) won at No. 3 7-5, 6-3.

Ripon won the other three singles matches and took all three doubles matches to win the match. The Scots had a chance in all three doubles matches. Shie and Guenther lost at No. 1 doubles in a tiebreaker 8-7 (11-9) while Day teamed with Andre Myklebust (Cambridge, Wisconsin) at No. 2 in an 8-6 loss. Nicholas Robertson (Covington, Georgia) and Matthew Simonson (Monmouth, Illinois) lost at No. 3 doubles 8-4.

In the afternoon match against Lawrence, Shie and Guenther won at No. 1 doubles 8-6 while Day and Myklebust lost at No. 2 8-5. The Scots dropped the No. 3 doubles match 8-0 and were down 2-1 after doubles.

Shie rallied to win at No. 1 singles 1-6, 7-5, 10-8 but the Scots dropped the other five singles matches for a 7-2 loss. Day lost at No. 3 singles in a third-set tiebreak 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.
