Box Score The Monmouth College men's soccer team (2-7-2, 0-2) played Knox to a stalemate over the final 70 minutes on Wednesday, but unfortunately the first 20 minutes gave the hosts a 4-2 win.
Knox jumped out to an early lead with a goal 15:53 into the contest. Less than 90 seconds later they doubled the lead. The Scots battled back and got on the board at 29:03.
Jaxon Coleman (Washington, Illinois) scored his third goal of the season on an assist from fellow senior Nico Esparon (Saint Denis, France) Neither team scored over the next 16 minutes and Knox led 2-1 at halftime.Â
Just 1:53 into the second half, Knox restored their two-goal lead to go on top 3-1. The Scots drew a penalty kick in the 50th minute and Esparon converted. Esparon's fifth goal of the season is his 13th career goal, tied with Isaac Hernandez (2010-13) for 11th on the Scots all-time list. He now has 37 career points, moving into a ninth on the all-time list ahead of Lucas Sondgeroth (2016-19).
The game stayed 3-2 for 10 minutes as a red card reduced Knox to 10 players. But the Prairie Fire went back on top by two on a PK of their own at the 59:14 mark. The Scots outshot Knox 10-8, had six more corners and six less fouls, but couldn't get another goal over the final 30 minutes.
Marcos Garibay (Waukegan, Illinois) made two saves in goal for the Scots.
The Scots return home on Saturday with an 11 a.m. game against Ripon. The contest starts a three-game MWC homestand for the Scots.
