Box Score 4 The only home Monmouth sporting event over the weekend was the
men's soccer game against Cornell on Saturday. Football had the week off across the conference while cross country also had the weekend off from competition. Four Monmouth teams played on the road over the weekend and we've got a recap of all the results here.
Volleyball Opens Conference Play in Iowa
The volleyball team went to Iowa for the weekend and dropped a pair of Midwest Conference matches. On Friday night the Scots took a set but fell to Grinnell 25-21, 25-27, 25-21, 25-14. The first two sets both had two lead changes and the match was even after the second set. Monmouth had 15 kills in the second set and hit .220 after hitting .091 in the opener.
The third set had seven ties and four lead changes before the Pioneers pulled away. Grinnell never trailed in the fourth set as they hit .448 and finished off the match.
Freshman
Layne Wright (Davenport, Iowa) led the Scots with 13 kills while
Loryn Beal (Pontiac, Illinois) had six.
Karlie Drish (Milan, Illinois) had 16 assists with
Paige Bergschneider (Alexander, Illinois) providing 12.
Kaylee Woodard (Monmouth, Illinois) had 19 digs while Beal had 12 and Bergschneider had seven. Beal had two of the Scots three aces and Megan Kimble (Farmington, Illinois) led the team with two blocks.
"The team provided good energy and great moments of high-level competition this weekend," said coach
Emily Thebeau. "We are excited to move forward and continue our conference matches while making a new statement for Monmouth volleyball."
Saturday afternoon's match went to Cornell 25-20, 25-14, 25-16. Wright and
Amanda Dybal (Apex, North Carolina) both had seven kills to lead the way for the Scots. Drish had 15 assists while Bergschneider added seven. Woodard posted 16 digs and Beal had seven. Beal led the Scots with four aces. Cornell outhit the Scots .230 to .076.
The Scots are now 7-9 overall and 0-2 in MWC play. This will be the first one-match week of the season for the Scots as they head to Lake Forest for a 1 p.m. MWC contest on Saturday.
Women's Soccer Heads to Iowa
The women's soccer team went to Iowa on Sunday and fell 4-1 at Simpson College. The Scots fell behind just 8:36 into the match and went down 2-0 in the 27
th minute as Cassie Nash netted her second of the game. Monmouth got back into the contest in the 31
st minute as
Jordyn Gosell (Antioch, Illinois) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Her twin sister
Payton Gosell (Antioch, Illinois) picked up the assist as Jordyn headed home.
The game stayed 2-1 through halftime and for the first 15 minutes of the second half. Simpson went up 3-1 in the 64
th minute and made it 4-1 with 58 seconds left to play.
"It was a great team we played tight for a majority of the minutes," said coach
Lucas Henderson. "The way we battled back tonight inspires me to go back to the drawing board to see what our staff can do to put this team in a better place to succeed."
Goalkeeper
Quinn Cutler (Breese, Illinois) made a career-high 16 saves in the loss. Monmouth was outshot 28-17 and shots on goal were 16-8.
Jordyn Gosell led the Scots with three shots on goal while both
Kimberly Lopez (Kenosha, Wisconsin) and
Sophie Roberts () had two.
The Scots (1-7) will be home at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday for a non-conference match against nationally ranked Loras College. Monmouth will also host Lake Forest at 11 a.m. Saturday in the MWC opener.
Tennis Plays Conference Matches in Wisconsin
Women's tennis went to Wisconsin for the weekend and lost matches to Ripon College and Lawrence University. Both matches ended 9-0 and the Scots are now 0-3 in MWC play.The morning match was at Ripon, The Red Hawks took all threedoubles matches with 8-2, 8-3 and 8-0 wins. Two singles matches had tie breakers in sets as
Julia Mheidze (Springfield, Illinois) dropped a set 7-6 at No. 4 singles and
Ditza Montesinos (Villa Park, Illinois) did the same at No. 5. Meanwhile freshman
Jennifer Shimmin (Monmouth, Illinois) played a pair of closet sets falling 6-4, 6-3
"I thought we competed well on Saturday, especially at the bottom of the lineup," said coach Brian Jordan.
The afternoon match was in Appleton against Lawrence and the doubles matches went 8-0, 8-0, 8-2. At No. 1 singles,
Emily Laughlin (Milan, Illinois) lost 6-3, 6-2 in the most competitive singles match.
Monmouth will be in action on the road Saturday as they head to Jacksonville, Illinois. The match at Illinois College begins at 1 p.m. and is the final road match of the year for the Scots.
Golf Competes at Millikin
The women's golf team played in the Decheret Classic in Decatur, Illinois over the weekend. The event, hosted by Millikin, consisted of one round at Red Tail Run on Friday and a second round at South Side Country Club on Saturday.
The event included more than 70 golfers from 13 different teams. Monmouth freshman
Amanda Stevens (Mason City, Illinois) finished 60
th with a 102 on Friday, a 96 on Saturday and a total of 198. Sophomore
Sarah Saddoris (Port Byron, Illinois) shot a 110 and a 108 for a total of 218 in 66
th place.
The golf team will play in the Iowa Wesleyan Tiger Classic on Tuesday in Fort Madison, Iowa. Tee times at Shaeffer Memorial Golf Course begin at 10 a.m.
