Monmouth's men's tennis team was one up and one down in their first matches in Orlando, Fla., Sunday.

Joseph Shie picked up the Scots' lone win in the day's opener with Piedmont College, an 8-1 team loss. Shie cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles after falling in a nail-biter in doubles. Shie and
Zach Harris were clipped by Piedmont at No. 1 doubles, falling 8-7.

Andrew Shie nearly matched Joseph's singles success at No. 2. The younger Shie dropped the opening set 6-4 and nearly forced a third set tiebreaker. Shie narrowly missed the extra set, falling 7-6 in Set 2.

The Scots edged Transylvania 5-4 in Sunday night's matchup.
Andrew Shie and
Brendan Guenther earned an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, and combined with
Alex Martin and
Nicholas Robertson's win by default at No. 3, the Scots entered singles play with a 2-0 lead.

Robertson took the No. 6 singles point with a default win as the Scots clinched the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles.
Joseph Shie outlasted his No. 1 opponent after dropping Set 1, 6-3. Shie rallied back with a 6-2, 10-7 win in Sets 2 and 3. Guenther won his first set at No. 5, 7-5 and then rolled to a 6-3 second set win.
