Monmouth stayed atop the Midwest Conference South Division standings after earning a split at Cornell Saturday, coming back from a 15-5 loss in Game 1 to post a 4-2 Game 2 win.
The Scots came from a 2-1 deficit in the late game to score three in the top of the eighth, giving reliever
Alex Sheetz his third win of the season.The Rams touched starter
Ryan Schulz for two runs in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. Monmouth's bullpen then kept the Rams scoreless, setting up the eighth inning heroics.
Harry Sanchez led off the eighth reaching on a hit batsman ahead of
Mike Dato who slammed his two-run homer to left for a 3-2 lead. Dato finished the game with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. Designated hitter
Shamus Murphy added an insurance run with a two-out double to plate
Tyler Ulfig in the inning. Sheetz set the Rams down in order in the bottom of the frame, but had to pitch out of a bases loaded one-out jam in the ninth.Â
Monmouth scored five in the first inning of the day's first game, but none after that in the Game 1 loss. The Rams broke loose for a six-run fifth and added four more in the sixth to win going away while banging out 22 hits.
The Scots step outside the conference Tuesday for a twinbill at Iowa Wesleyan beginning at 5 p.m.
