Playing on outdoor courts for the first time this spring, the Monmouth College men's tennis team took a while to get acclimated, but the persistence paid off Friday in a 9-0 win over Penn State-Berks in their Spring Break finale.
    Â
Joseph Shie and
Zach Harris got the Scots rolling with an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles.
Brendan Guenther and
Andrew Shie followed suit at No. 2 with an 8-2 win. It was a bit more challenging at No. 3 where
Alex Martin and
Nicholas Robertson clawed their way to an 8-6 win.
    Â
It was much the same in doubles play where everyone picked up straight set wins.
Joseph Shie cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1.
Andrew Shie and Guenther won by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores at Nos. 2 and 5, respectively.
    Â
Harris had little problem at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-1 win. After edging his opponent 6-3 in the first set, Martin blanked the competition in the second 6-0. Freshman
Nicholas Robertson netted his first collegiate win by a 6-1, 6-2 score at No. 6.
    Â
Monmouth had opened play with a 9-0 loss to Muhlenberg and an 8-1 loss against St. John's in their first two outdoor matches of 2019.
    Â
The Scots continue on the road with a March 16 trip to Wartburg where they'll face the host Knights and Morningside College.
