After six ties and nine lead changes, Monmouth came up just short in a 60-56 loss at Lawrence Saturday afternoon.
Â
Will Carius' free throw with 9:21 left in the game gave the Scots their last lead at 44-43 as the Vikings tied the game and then took the lead on three straight free throws. Never trailing by more than seven down the stretch, Monmouth cut the deficit to 52-49 on
Tyler Houston's layup with 4:41 left. The Scots closed within three, three times in the final 30 seconds, once on a Houston free throw and again on a Carius trip to the line. Carius, who finished with 28 points, scored the Scots' final bucket with four seconds left to trail 59-56. Following a Monmouth timeout, Lawrence was fouled immediately to stop the clock, but iced the game with a free throw for the final margin. The Vikings were aided with a 4-for-6 performance from the line in the final 29 seconds.
Â
Houston and
D.J. Swift joined Carius in double figures with 10 points each.
