Hayden Nelson broke record-setting former Scot and now NFL quarterback Alex Tanney's single-game touchdown passing record with seven scores in Saturday's 49-0 win over Lawrence.
Â
Nelson surpassed Tanney – now with the New York Giants – when he hit
Jacolby Maxwell for Maxwell's record-tying fourth TD for the last score of the game in the third quarter. The grab gave Maxwell a share of the record with teammate
Yansay Williams' mark of four TD receptions set in 2016.
Â
The Scots rolled up 461 yards of offense – 197 through the air – as the defense held the Vikings to just 108 yards and only 30 on the ground.
Â
DeAndre Wright – who hauled in Nelson's first TD toss of the game – rushed for 169 yards while also grabbing four passes for 28 yards. Following Wright's scoring grab, Wes Anderson snared Nelsoj's second and Maxwell hauled in the next two – the longest a 65-yard catch-and-run with 11:09 left in the second quarter.
Triston Gibson's six-yard TD catch four minutes later gave Monmouth a 35-0 halftime lead.
Â
Monmouth's defense once again spent the day in the opponent's backfield, netting nine tackles for loss and three sacks.
Â
The Scots open Midwest Conference South Division play next Saturday when they host Grinnell for Homecoming. Kickoff is set for a special 2 p.m. start.
