Box Score Monmouth's women's tennis team got off to a fast start, blanking Blackburn 9-0 in the season opener for both teams.
The Scots took a quick 3-0 lead after doubles competition.
Emma Johanns and
McKenzie DeVilder eked out an 8-6 win at No. 1 while
Rachel Leifheit and
Natalie Curtis cruised to an 8-3 win at No. 2. Monmouth picked up the No. 3 points when the Beavers failed to field a twosome to face
Lexi Tibbs and
Haley Johnston.
Monmouth rolled to six points in singles play where Leifheit and Curtis combined to drop just four games at Nos. 4 and 5. Leifheit won at No. 4 by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores and Curtis cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5. DeVilder and Johnston had a bit closer contests at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. The tandem won by identical 6-3, 6-2 scores. Johanns led her No. 1 singles match 3-0 before her opponent retired. Tibbs earned the winning points at No. 6 when Blackburn could not fill the position.
The Scots open their home season Sat., Sept. 1 hosting Simpson and Wartburg at the Monmouth College Tennis Stadium.
