Box Score Jake Starkey recorded his record-setting 10th career save and
Grant Myers pulled within one of the season and career homerun records as Monmouth defeated Aurora in an elimination game at the NCAA Central Regional in Sauget, Ill.
In a game that began 10 hours after the scheduled 1:15 start, the Scots posted a four-run fourth inning, but had to hold off a Spartan six-run rally in the seventh.
Grant Myers picked up three hits and four RBIs - three on a third inning homerun - and scored three times as Monmouth advanced to Saturday's 4:30 elimination game. They'll meet the loser of Game 7 scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday between Rhodes and Webster - ranked No. 7 in the national polls. Myers sits at 10 homers this season, one shy of Taylor Thiel's 2002 record, and 17 for his career, also one behind Thiel. He needs just two more RBIs to tie Ryan Stubler's career mark.
Monmouth banged out 14 hits in the game and took advantage of four Aurora errors to defeat the Spartans for the third straight time in the postseason, eliminating Aurora from the Regional as they had in 2002.
Starkey provided the winning run, driving in
Cameron Kellar with an RBI double in the top of the ninth with the score tied at 10-10. Kellar had milked a leadoff walk and was moved to second on
Max Garey's sac bunt.
Storms in the St. Louis area had pushed the game back to an 11 p.m. start and ended shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday.
