Box Score 2 Host Monmouth advanced to Saturday's title game of the 2018 Midwest Conference Baseball Championships with an 8-3 opening game win over Lawrence, followed by a 5-4 late-inning win over St. Norbert.
Â
The Scots exploded for a six-run sixth against Lawrence to come back from a 3-2 deficit.
Tyler Ulfig's two-run double to right and a
Grant Myers two-RBI base hit provided the big blows in the inning to give
Tyler McDonald the complete-game victory. McDonald fanned seven and scattered seven hits in his fifth win of the season.
Â
Monmouth then scratched out a run in the top of the ninth in a 5-4 win over St. Norbert, earning Connor Sharp his fifth win and
Jake Starkey his ninth career save, tying the program record. Myers drew a leadoff walk in the final inning and moved to second on a
Bryson Sheppard sac bunt. After a
Mike Dato groundout moved Myers to third, Ulfig delivered the RBI hit for the eventual game winner.
Â
Grinnell and St. Norbert will have a rematch Saturday morning at 10 after the Green Knights rallied for eight runs in the eighth inning of their opener in Galesburg. Trailing 11-4 in the bottom of the ninth, St. Norbert pounded out seven hits in the inning as Brett Reinhart knocked in two runs including the winner on a hit batsman. A batter earlier, Robbie Dombrowski earned the tying RBI with a hit batsman.
Â
Grinnell rebounded with a 12-11 come-from-behind win over Lawrence in Game 4. Grinnell had jumped out to a 4-1 first inning lead, but trailed 11-6 in the sixth before plating two runs in each of the next three innings for the win. Quinton McNitt's base knock in the bottom of the eighth plated Benjamin Wong with what proved to be the game-winner.
Â
Monmouth meets the winner of Saturday's Grinnell vs. St. Norbert game in a 1 p.m. contest and could win their first title since 2002 with a win. A loss would force a 4 p.m. game for the crown and the automatic NCAA berth.
