Box Score 2 Monmouth won Game 1, 6-5 in dramatic fashion to set one record and then rolled to an 11-0 win in the nightcap at Illinois College to share the top spot in the Midwest Conference South Division.
Bryson Sheppard reached on an error with one out in the top of the ninth in the opener and
Harry Sanchez followed with his second straight hit - a double - to drive Sheppard in from first with what proved to be the winning run.
Jake Starkey toed the rubber in the bottom of the inning and, after surrendering a two-out hit, picked off the potential tying run at first to end the game and earn his record-setting sixth save of the season. The junior is just three saves from setting the career mark. IC had taken a 2-1 first inning lead and led 3-2 heading into the fifth.
Grant Myers gave the Scots their first lead with a two-run homer an inning before the Scots added another for a 5-3 lead in the sixth. The Blueboys knotted the game with a pair of runs in the sixth before Monmouth's ninth inning heroics.
Connor Sharp worked eight innings, striking out six, and got plenty of support in the late game. The Scots banged out 14 hits as Myers and
Mike Dato each stroked two-run homers in a four-run seventh. Dato, who had a 3-for-4 game at the plate, had launched a solo shot the inning before to give Monmouth a 3-0 lead. After a shaky start, Sharp settled in by the third inning, facing just four over the minimum over the next six innings.
Monmouth and Grinnell sit tied atop the MWC with 9-5 league marks.
The teams meet for noon rematch in Monmouth Saturday.
