SCOTS OFF TO 3-1 START IN MIDWEST CONFERENCE

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Monmouth took two of three from Knox Saturday afternoon at Glasgow Field to open the Midwest Conference season 3-1. The Scots finished Thursday's suspended game 14-9, then won Game 1 of the regularly scheduled doubleheader 10-4 before falling in the nightcap 6-5.

Leading 10-9 heading into the completion of Thursday's suspended game at Knox, the Scots broke the game open with a four run ninth. Monmouth had rallied on Thursday with a six-run eighth after entering the inning trailing 7-4. Tyler Ulfig's two-run base hit in the eighth provided the key hit. Monmouth put their first three batters on in the ninth to seal the win.

Monmouth got seven strong innings from Ryan Schulz on the mound in Game 1 as the Scots used three, three-run innings to improve to 3-0 in the MWC. Schulz scattered 10 hits while Harry Sanchez picked up three hits and two RBIs while scoring twice. The Scots took advantage of first inning Knox errors to plate three runs and piled on three more unearned runs in the fifth. After tacking on a single run in the seventh to make it 7-2, the Scots sent eight batters to the plate in the eights, scoring three more. Knox scratched out a pair of runs in the ninth before Ridge Greeman shut down the threat.

Knox scored three runs over the final two innings to avoid the sweep. The Scots had taken a 3-2 lead in the fifth on RBI singles by Bryson Sheppard and Grant Myers before the Prairie Fire answered with two in the sixth to give the visitors a 4-3 lead. Monmouth countered in their half of the frame when Christian Lett doubled in a run and Matt Temaner's sac fly brought Lett home for a 5-4 lead. Knox parlayed two walks to open the eight into a run to knot the game at 5-5 and then took the lead with a pair of runs in the ninth when a base hit drove in the go-ahead run and a wild pitch allowed an insurance run to score.

Jake Starkey's 4-for-4 effort in the day's final game gave him a 9-for-18 series against Monmouth's rivals.

The Scots resume their home stand next weekend when they host the University of the Ozarks in a Saturday twinbill and a single game on Sunday.
