Box Score 2 Monmouth celebrated Coach Alan Betourne's birthday with a 9-5, 14-6 sweep of Simpson at Glasgow Field behind a grand slam from
Campbell Quirk and
Harry Sanchez' cycle.
Â
The Scots used a trio of three-run innings in the opener to support a seven-inning, five-strikeout performance for
Tyler McDonald's first win of the season. Trailing 2-0, Monmouth scored three unearned runs in the fourth as
Jake Starkey's two-run single up the middle highlighted the inning. The Storm bounced back with two in the top of the six ahead of Monmouth's three-run bottom  half of the frame.
Christian Lett sparked the Scots with a one-out single and Starkey followed with his second hit of the game. After Lett came home on a passed ball,
Bryson Sheppard and
Mike Dato delivered RBI hits. The Scots tacked on three more in the eighth as
Ridge Greenman came from the bullpen to close out the game.
Â
Quirk jacked his grand slam in the fifth as the Scots batted around and the next inning Sanchez collected a double to complete his cycle after smoking a two-run homer in his first at-bat in the second inning. Trailing 4-3 in the fifth, the Scots blew the  gaem open in the fifth, sending 13 batters to the plate. Connor Sharp picked up his second win, working seven innings and striking out seven. Quirk's grand slam was the Scots' first since Ryan Sparks' 4-RBI homer in March of 2015. Sanchez delivered Monmouth's first cycle since Hall of Famer Casey Boystun delivered in 1999.
Â
Monmouth returns to Glasgow Field Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with MacMurray before opening Midwest Conference play next Thursday at Knox.
